Split's old town is built inside a Roman emperor's palace, and this route of about 6 km covers it before heading west to Marjan Hill. It starts at Bačvice, the sandy city beach where locals play picigin in the shallows, and passes the Green Market below the palace's eastern wall. Inside Diocletian's Palace, the columned Peristyle sits under the cathedral bell tower, and the north Golden Gate is guarded by the giant bronze statue of Gregory of Nin; rubbing his toe is said to bring luck.
Fruit Square and the arcades of Republic Square lead to the yellow Croatian National Theatre and on to Poljud, the shell-shaped stadium of Hajduk Split. The bonus stop is the Marjan viewpoint over the old town and the harbour, and the route ends at the Meštrović Gallery, the sculptor's white villa on the hillside. The Marjan steps start from the Varoš quarter, west of the old town.
