Dubrovnik's route stays in and around the walled Old Town, about 3 km, so it fits easily into a cruise stop or a half day. It starts at Fort Lovrijenac on its cliff outside the walls and enters through the Pile Gate onto the Stradun, the polished limestone main street. Luža Square with Orlando's Column, the baroque cathedral and the grand Jesuit Stairs are all within a few minutes of each other.
The Old Port and the Ploče Gate mark the eastern side, and the Dominican Monastery sits by the harbour end of the town. Minčeta Tower is the high round corner of the walls, and the bonus stop is Banje Beach, just outside the Ploče Gate, with the walls and Lokrum island across the water. Cruise passengers usually arrive by bus at the Pile Gate. Come early or late in summer, when ships are in port the Stradun is packed by mid-morning.
Coming from a cruise ship
Most ships dock at Gruž harbour, about 3 km from the old town; city buses and port shuttles run to the Pile Gate, where this route starts at Fort Lovrijenac. Ships that anchor in the bay tender passengers to the Old Port, inside the walls. The whole route is about 3 km and fits easily in a port call; leave 45 minutes to get back to Gruž.
