City walking apps compared

GPSmyCity, Let's Roam, Questo and RunCity. Checked October 2026; prices and catalogues change, so check each app before you buy.

Four apps turn a city into something to follow on foot, but they do different jobs. GPSmyCity is a library of guided walks with offline maps. Let's Roam and Questo are scavenger hunts with riddles, trivia and photo challenges. RunCity is a checkpoint game: a route of landmarks, a GPS check-in at each one and a leaderboard per city. Here is how they differ, so you can pick the one that fits your trip.

When to pick which

GPSmyCity

Choose it if you want commentary at each stop and no data plan abroad. It has the widest catalogue and works offline, but it is a guide, not a game.

Let's Roam

Choose it for a group outing or a team event, especially in the US: every player gets a role and challenges arrive as you walk.

Questo

Choose it if you like riddles and stories: you solve clues using the statues and buildings around you.

RunCity

Choose it if you want to see a European city's best-known sights on foot and make it count: each landmark is verified by GPS on the server, so a time on the leaderboard means something, and runners can race the route. Every route is also a free page you can follow without playing, for example Lisbon, Prague or Budapest.
