Ljubljana's centre is largely car-free, and this route covers it in about 6.5 km, from the Metelkova art quarter to Tivoli Park. The bonus stop, Metelkova, is a former army barracks covered in graffiti and sculpture, a short walk from the bronze dragons on the Dragon Bridge. Along the Ljubljanica river come the green-domed cathedral, Plečnik's Triple Bridge, Congress Square and Republic Square with the parliament.

Nebotičnik, a slim 1930s skyscraper, has a café on its top floor. The route climbs to Ljubljana Castle on its hill; a funicular runs up from the old market if you prefer. Back down, the courtyard of Križanke and the birch-lined Trnovo Bridge are more of Plečnik's work, and the walk ends in Tivoli Park. The riverside cafés are busy from spring to autumn, and the city's free electric carts, the Kavalir, carry anyone who needs a ride in the pedestrian zone.
