Kotor's walled old town fits in a triangle between the bay and the mountain, and this route covers it in about 1.5 km, plus a long climb at the end. It starts at the Kampana Tower on the town walls and enters through the Sea Gate beside the Clock Tower. The small twelfth-century Church of St Luke, the River Gate in the north wall and the twin-towered Cathedral of St Tryphon are all a few minutes apart in the maze of lanes, where the town's many cats sleep in doorways.

The climb up the fortress walls starts behind the old town; Our Lady of Remedy, a little church halfway up, is a good place to rest. The route returns to the Gurdić Gate and the harbour, and the bonus stop is the San Giovanni Fortress, about 1,350 steps above the town. The climb charges an entry fee in season and is best started early, before the heat and the cruise crowds.

Coming from a cruise ship

Ships dock or tender right outside the Sea Gate, so the old town starts a few steps from the pier. The lanes take an hour; the climb to San Giovanni Fortress, the bonus stop, takes another one to two hours up and down, so start early before the heat and the other ships' passengers. The fortress climb charges an entry fee in season.
