Sarajevo's centre runs along the Miljacka river from Austro-Hungarian avenues to the Ottoman bazaar, and this route covers it in about 3 km before climbing to the fortresses. It starts at the Eternal Flame on Ferhadija street, burning since 1946, and passes the Orthodox Cathedral, the twin-towered Catholic Sacred Heart Cathedral and the great Gazi Husrev-beg Mosque within a few hundred metres of each other.

The Latin Bridge is where Archduke Franz Ferdinand was shot in 1914, and the Emperor's Mosque, the oldest in the city, stands across the river. In Baščaršija, the old bazaar, the wooden Sebilj fountain is the meeting point, and the Moorish City Hall stands on the riverbank. The route climbs to the Yellow Fortress, a classic sunset viewpoint, and the bonus stop, the White Fortress above the town. Look for Sarajevo Roses, shell scars in the pavement filled with red resin.
