About RunCity

A checkpoint game for exploring cities on foot.

The best way to know a city is to walk it. RunCity gives that walk a shape: a set of checkpoints worth getting to, a reason to take the next street instead of the next tram, and a leaderboard that tells you how your afternoon compares with everyone else's.

What we care about

Real places

Every checkpoint is a place you can stand: a gate, a square, a bridge, a statue, a courtyard. Each one is positioned against OpenStreetMap and given a radius that fits the spot, so a check-in works where a visitor would naturally stop. City and checkpoint photos are freely licensed images from Wikimedia Commons, credited in the app.

A fair leaderboard

A leaderboard is only fun if it is honest. RunCity checks every check-in on the server, not on your phone: the distance to the checkpoint, the accuracy of the GPS fix, the clock on your device and whether you could have covered the ground from your last checkpoint that quickly. Photo check-ins are looked at by a person. Runs that do not add up are flagged and kept off the board.

Your location is yours

RunCity reads your position when you tap Validate, and records your route only during a timed run you chose to track. It does not follow you around in the background, and it never sells data. The privacy policy lists exactly what is stored.

No app store in the way

RunCity runs in your phone's browser and can be added to the home screen. A friend can tap a link you shared and be playing a minute later.

Play safely

RunCity is played on real streets. Keep an eye on traffic rather than the screen, respect private property and opening hours, and never take a risk for a faster time. No leaderboard place is worth it.
