Salzburg's old town is compact, and this route covers both banks of the Salzach in about 4 km. It starts high up at Nonnberg Abbey, the convent from The Sound of Music, and continues to Hohensalzburg Fortress on its rock; the funicular from Festungsgasse is the easy way up or down. Below are the twin-towered cathedral on Domplatz, Mozart's statue on Mozartplatz and Getreidegasse, the lane of wrought-iron shop signs where Mozart was born.

The Festival Halls line Hofstallgasse, and the Makartsteg footbridge, hung with love locks, crosses to the new town for the Mozart family residence, St Sebastian's Church and its cemetery, and the Mirabell Gardens with the fortress framed behind the Pegasus fountain. The bonus stop is the Augustiner Bräustübl, a monastery brewery with a big beer garden, a short walk north along the river.
