Český Krumlov is a small medieval town wrapped in a loop of the Vltava, and this route covers it in about 2 km, an easy hour on foot. It starts at the Budějovice Gate, the last of the town's old gates, and climbs into the castle, the second largest in the country, to its colourful round tower. Barber's Bridge crosses the river with the castle rising behind it.

Svornosti Square, with its plague column and town hall, is the centre, and the Egon Schiele Art Centrum fills an old brewery by the river. The Gothic Saint Vitus Church and the tall Cloak Bridge, which links the castle courtyards high above a ravine, lead to the bonus stop, the Castle Gardens with their revolving open-air auditorium. The town fills with day visitors from late morning; staying overnight gives you the lanes to yourself in the evening. In summer you can raft or canoe the river loop.
