Gdańsk's Main Town was rebuilt after 1945 in its old Hanseatic form, and this route covers it in about 3 km before heading to the shipyard where Solidarity began. It starts at the medieval wooden Crane on the Motława quay and looks across to Granary Island. Through the four-arched Green Gate you reach the Long Market, lined with tall gabled merchant houses, and Neptune's Fountain in front of Artus Court.
St Mary's Church, one of the largest brick churches in the world, has a tower you can climb for a view over the roofs. The Golden Gate marks the western end of the Royal Way, and St Catherine's is the oldest church in the Main Town. The bonus stop is the European Solidarity Centre, a rust-red building beside the gate of the shipyard where the 1980 strikes started. Look for amber in the shops along Mariacka Street.
