Wrocław is a city of islands and bridges on the Oder, and this route of about 5.5 km crosses the old town to Cathedral Island and out to the Centennial Hall. It starts at the Market Square, one of the largest in Poland, with its Gothic Old Town Hall, and the tower of St Elizabeth's Church, which you can climb. The long baroque front of the university faces the river, and the brick Market Hall stands beside the canal.
The Tumski Bridge leads to Ostrów Tumski, where a lamplighter still lights the gas lamps by hand every evening, and the twin-towered cathedral. The Racławice Panorama, a 114-metre circular battle painting, is back across the river, and the bonus stop is the Centennial Hall, a vast early concrete dome on the UNESCO list, a tram ride east. Look out for the city's hundreds of small bronze dwarfs along the way.
