Bergen is Norway's harbour city between seven mountains, and this route covers its centre in about 4 km, ending above it on Mount Fløyen. It starts at Håkonshallen, the medieval royal hall in the fortress by the harbour, and St Mary's Church, the oldest building in the city. Bryggen, the old Hanseatic wharf, is a row of colourful wooden gables with narrow passages behind them, on the UNESCO list.
The lower station of the Fløibanen funicular is a few minutes away; the route then crosses Skostredet, a lane of wooden houses, to the cathedral and the fish market by the harbour, and the Lille Lungegårdsvann pond with its fountain and music pavilion. The bonus stop is the Fløyen viewpoint, with the harbour, the wharf and the islands below. Bergen is one of Europe's rainiest cities, so bring a waterproof jacket whatever the forecast.
