Stockholm is built on islands, and this route crosses four of them in about 9 km. It starts on Djurgården at the gate of Skansen, the open-air museum, and the Vasa Museum, whose roof carries the masts of the ship inside. Fotografiska, the photography museum, sits in an old customs house on the Södermalm shore; from there you cross to Gamla stan for the narrowest alley, Mårten Trotzigs gränd, the merchant houses of Stortorget and the Royal Palace.
The Riddarholmen Church with its open iron spire is on its own islet, and the route then climbs Södermalm to the Monteliusvägen path and the bonus stop, the bare rock of Skinnarviksberget, both looking over the water to City Hall. City Hall's tower with the three crowns and the cherry trees of Kungsträdgården end the walk. Ferries from Slussen to Djurgården are part of the public transport network.
Coming from a cruise ship
Large ships use Frihamnen, about 4 km north-east of the centre and linked by bus, or Stadsgården on Södermalm, right next to Fotografiska, which is a stop on this route. From Stadsgården, walk to Gamla stan in 15 minutes and take the Djurgården ferry from Slussen for Skansen and the Vasa Museum.
