Tbilisi's old town sits in the gorge of the Kura river under a ridge of fortress walls, and this route covers it in about 4 km. It starts at the Mother of Georgia, an aluminium statue holding a sword for enemies and a bowl of wine for friends, and follows the ridge to Narikala Fortress; a cable car runs up from Rike Park if you prefer. Below, the brick domes of the Abanotubani sulphur baths rise from the ground, and Metekhi Church stands on its cliff above the river.

Sioni Cathedral and the glass-and-steel Bridge of Peace lead to Anchiskhati, the oldest surviving church in the city, and to Freedom Square with its golden St George column. The bonus stop is the Dry Bridge Market, an open-air flea market of art, rugs and Soviet souvenirs. The old town's lanes are steep, and a churchkhela, walnuts in grape jelly, makes a good snack on the way.
