Tallinn's medieval Old Town is one of the best preserved in Europe, and this route covers it in about 4 km, starting just outside in Telliskivi Creative City, the bonus stop, where old factory halls now hold cafés, shops and street art. From there you climb Toompea, the upper town, to the onion domes of the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral and the Kohtuotsa and Patkuli viewing platforms over the red roofs.

The lower town starts at Town Hall Square and the Town Hall Pharmacy, in business for six centuries, and continues through St Catherine's Passage to the round Viru Gate towers. Freedom Square, the tall spire of St Olaf's and the Fat Margaret tower at the harbour end close the loop. The cobbles are uneven, so wear proper shoes; the ferry terminal for Helsinki is a ten-minute walk from Fat Margaret.

Coming from a cruise ship

Cruise ships dock at the Old City Harbour, a 10–15 minute walk from the Fat Margaret tower at the edge of the Old Town. The whole route is about 4 km, so a port day leaves time for all of it: start in the Old Town, climb Toompea for the viewing platforms and end at Telliskivi, the bonus stop, a short walk west of the walls.
