Strasbourg's old town sits on an island in the river Ill, and this route of about 6 km crosses it before heading out to the European quarter. It starts at Place Kléber and goes into Petite France, the old tanners' district of half-timbered houses and canals. The Ponts Couverts with their three towers and the Barrage Vauban, a covered dam with a free rooftop terrace, guard the western end of the island.
Saint-Thomas Church, Place Gutenberg and the cathedral, with its single pink sandstone spire, lead to the Palais Rohan by the river. The route then crosses into the German-built Neustadt to Place de la République, continues to the bonus stop, the Parc de l'Orangerie, where storks nest in the trees, and ends at the curved glass tower of the European Parliament. Trams cover the last stretch quickly. In December the Christmas markets fill every square.
