Rhodes Town has one of the best preserved medieval walled towns in Europe, built by the Knights of St John, and this route covers it in about 4 km. It starts at the old windmills on the Mandraki harbour mole and the domed New Market, then enters the walls to the towered Palace of the Grand Master. The Clock Tower, which you can climb, stands beside the pink Suleymaniye Mosque.

The cobbled Street of the Knights is lined with the inns of the knights' different nations, and the twin-towered Marine Gate opens onto the harbour. In the old Jewish quarter, the Kahal Shalom Synagogue is the oldest in Greece. The bonus stop is the restored ancient stadium on Monte Smith hill, a walk or short bus ride west of the walls, near the Temple of Apollo. Cruise ships dock just outside the walls, so the old town is busiest in the middle of the day.
