Royal quarter, Nyhavn and Christianshavn with two playgrounds

  • 2 hoursWith play time

This walk is about 3.4 km and links five of Copenhagen's sights: the Marble Church, Amalienborg Palace, Nyhavn, the Christiania main gate and the Church of Our Saviour. It starts at the Kongens Have playground, passes through the royal quarter to Nyhavn, and crosses the harbour on the Inderhavnsbroen footbridge to Christianshavn.

Two playgrounds frame it: the one in Kongens Have at the start and the one on the old Christianshavn rampart at the end. Both are mapped as open to the public. The harbour is the only water in the way, and the bridge is for people on foot and bikes.

Tips for parents

  • Visit Copenhagen calls the playground in the middle of Kongens Have perfect for kids, with a dragon to ride. Børnibyen says it suits younger children best and that the park café next door lets adults rest.
  • One family guide says children find the Nyhavn canal endlessly captivating and suggests stopping for ice cream. OSM maps free public toilets about 20 m from the Nyhavn checkpoint.
  • One family guide says children are fascinated by the changing of the guard at Amalienborg, when the Life Guard marches through the city to the palace square.
  • The route crosses the harbour on Inderhavnsbroen, a 180 m bridge for people on foot and bikes. Visit Copenhagen suggests stopping at the platforms on the bridge to watch the harbour bus, kayakers and sailing boats.
  • Børnibyen lists two playgrounds on the Christianshavn ramparts, a very small one for young children and a larger, staffed one, with giant chess and a water play area in summer. Another guide says the playground has water and toilet facilities.
