Old Town, the Planty and Wawel

  • 6Sights
  • 2Kid stops
  • about 2.5 kmDistance
  • 2 hoursWith play time

This walk is about 2.4 km and links six of Kraków's sights: Collegium Maius, the Cloth Hall, St. Mary's Basilica, the Church of Saints Peter and Paul, Wawel Cathedral and the Wawel Dragon. Two playgrounds on the Planty, the park that rings the Old Town, break it up: Dzikie Planty and Plantuś.

The Main Square is a pedestrian-only zone, so the first half is easy to share with small children. Both playgrounds are fenced and have a soft surface, and they are close together on the way from the Main Square to Wawel, so it is easy to stop at one before the last stretch to the dragon.

Tips for parents

  • One guide says the Planty playgrounds are not too big, but it is easy to stop at one on the way from the Main Square to Wawel. Both Dzikie Planty and Plantuś are fenced.
  • Dzikie Planty has a carousel with snails and a wooden platform, on a soft surface. Plantuś is themed on how people once lived, with different homes, and has a soft substrate and bark; the regional tourism site calls it suitable for disabled children.
  • A family guide says kids can run free on the Main Square, a pedestrian-only zone that this walk crosses between Collegium Maius and St. Mary's.
  • The Wawel Dragon statue at the end of the walk makes real fire every now and then, according to a family guide, so kids may want to wait for it.
  • OSM maps a public toilet about 96 m from Wawel Cathedral.
